Lost sites are everywhere. Often at the edge of cities, they can be seen with litter and plants growing through cracked pavement. They represent a past that once was, but can they be more? Instead of being left derelict until development occurs, can they be brought back into the now?
This project outlines a design strategy to rehabilitate a paved vacant lot in Kitchener, Ontario. Inspired from a blanket that was found on a teepee on the site, the project seeks to weave the history, materiality, and ecology of the site and surroundings together. The aspiration is to elevate the aesthetics and functionality of the site through several low-cost strategies. Such strategies could be applied to other sites nearby to improve the city’s resilience in the face of climate change.
