In the past, humans took nature for granted and exploited vibrant ecosystems without restraints. Because of poor and inadequate management, lack of conservation, pollution and growing population, ecosystems and water supply around the world are now jeopardized. In addition, increasing demand for energy and climate change will have to be addressed in the following decades. “How?” you ask? Consider hydropower – the largest renewable source of energy, and hydro reservoirs that are primarily used for providing electricity and water management (flood and drought control). Multi-purpose hydropower reservoirs that take into consideration the surrounding landscape, local ecosystems, recreational activities, tourism, the local people, and the economy, could play a key role in tackling these challenges.
