The Fertile Meadow of the Canal

La Prairie du Canal, located in Bobigny, is rooted in the region’s rich industrial past. Originally, this site was part of the many peripheral zones around Paris dedicated to logistical and manufacturing activities, taking advantage of the proximity of the Canal de l’Ourcq for goods transportation. Like many industrial spaces in the Île-de-France region, the site was gradually abandoned following the decline of these activities in the latter half of the 20th century, leaving behind a fallow landscape marked by remnants of infrastructure and depleted soil.

It wasn’t until the early 2010s that La Prairie du Canal began to experience a revival under the initiative of the association La Sauge (Société d’Agriculture Urbaine Généreuse et Engagée). With the aim of rehabilitating this neglected space, the association set out to transform it into a place where urban agriculture, culture, and education coexist harmoniously. This project reflects a commitment to revitalizing the site while addressing the community’s growing need for accessible and welcoming green spaces.
