The International Brigades were military units formed to organize the volunteer troops who crossed the Pyrenees to support Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War. These Brigades operated for two years, from 1936 until 1938, when the Spanish Republic withdrew all international volunteers from its forces.

Throughout the war, an estimated 32,000 to 35,000 individuals served in the International Bri-gades, with around 15,000 losing their lives in combat. Some of these soldiers were buried in Fuencarral Cemetery, located in the outskirts of Madrid, which is our chosen Lost Site.
