The city of Mount Sterling, located in central Kentucky, sits directly between the mountainous and bluegrass regions of the state. The city is home to roughly 7,500 people and is known as the “gateway” between these two regions. One of the biggest challenges the city faces is the fact that it is in fact just a gateway, or connection between places people travel. Mount Sterling is simply not viewed by many to be a place to live and work in. Our project will aim to address this issue through a variety of different means. First, we will aim to improve the downtown area by proposing redevelopment and in-fill in some areas to bring more social and economic activity to the city. We will also aim to address the issue at hand through the redesign of sidewalks and streets to promote a more pedestrian friendly environment. We plan to add more green infrastructure throughout the downtown area as well as surrounding areas to help improve water quality, manage flooding that occurs in the area, and provide outdoor areas for various types of recreation. We plan to maintain the identity of this small Kentucky town, while also boosting its economy, implementing more green infrastructure and attracting new residents to not only reside in the community but to truly live within Mount Sterling.
