Westplein in Utrecht, Lombok, is a 0.95-hectare site ideally positioned as a connector between prominent locations in Utrecht, located at the edge of Lombok, the city’s most culturally diverse neighborhood. However, fast-moving car lanes isolate the site, leaving it disconnected and underutilized, with few visitors or activities. While local initiatives have tried to revitalize the area, the site’s isolation has hindered their success.
This project proposes reconnecting Westplein to the mosque plaza and Lombok by calming traffic and transforming the space into a vibrant hub. Locals can rent planters, sell produce, and engage in informal activities like meet-ing, playing, chatting, walking, or cycling, all within a lush garden inspired by Piet Oudolf’s designs. The project aims to connect not just places but also people, fostering a sense of community and interaction.
