Portugal’s second largest city, Porto, is known for its rich history, vibrant culture and beautiful architecture. Located in the north of Portugal along the Douro river, Porto’s landscape was profoundly influenced by its history of industrialization and rapid urban growth of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

As the industry sector began to decline or dislocate to new, more developed areas, many parts of the city that once hosted factories, warehouses and commercial hubs were left behind.

This shift led to the proliferation of abandoned buildings and vacant lots scattered throughout Porto.

In many cases, these sites are concentrated in former industrial districts on the outskirts, where their deteriorated condition is most apparent. The presence of these abandoned areas creates a sense of neglect which attracts illegal activities such as squatting and waste dumping. Despite this, many of these vacant areas hold opportunities tor revitalization, urban regeneration and development.
